Zero Waste Store Namibia recently celebrated seven years in business, marking a milestone for the country's first, and still only, dedicated zero-waste store.

Founded on 1 July 2019 by Brigitte Reissner, the business has spent the past seven years encouraging Namibians to shop more sustainably by reducing unnecessary packaging and buying only what they need.

The anniversary was celebrated together with the store's staff, whom Reissner described as an important part of the business' journey.

"I am very grateful to them. They are very loyal. We are a full ladies team, and I really pray that we can stay like this for a long time," Brigitte Reissner said.

Growing alongside its customers

What began as a small refill store has grown into a specialised supermarket offering everything from grains, spices and teas to cleaning products, cosmetics and gluten-free foods.

According to Reissner, the product range has nearly tripled over the years as the business continues to respond to customer demand.

"Health products have really increased because that is something the clients are looking for," Reissner said.

She added that the store has also built a loyal customer base, including local shoppers and lodges that regularly support the business. She emphasized how crucial it has been to continue listening to their customers and ensuring they deliver only the best.

Lessons learned along the journey

Running an independent business has not been without its challenges. Reissner said importing products has become increasingly difficult due to permits, customs requirements and rising logistics costs.

"It has taught me resilience and patience. It is not easy, especially as a small independent little store, but it has also been great fun and I have learned a lot," Reissner said.

Small choices, lasting impact

At the heart of the store's mission is reducing waste through simple changes in shopping habits. Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers or make use of paper bags, allowing them to purchase exactly the quantity they need.

"If you go home and you actually do not have anything to throw away, it makes a big difference," Reissner said.

Looking ahead, she hopes more Namibians will discover the convenience of refill shopping and sustainable living.

"We have grown, we have changed and we have added so many new products. Come and pop in and have a look," Reissner said.
