Heatwave hits hard

-

Namibia is expected to experience hot to extremely hot weather, with temperatures ranging from 36°C to 42°C, for the rest of the week and into the weekend, the Namibia Meteorological Service has warned.

The heatwave is being caused by a strong high-pressure system moving slowly from northern to central Namibia. The system causes air to sink and warm, resulting in elevated temperatures.

The worst-affected regions are expected to be Zambezi, Kavango East, Kavango West, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati, Kunene and Otjozondjupa.

The heat is expected to reach the Khomas Region by Friday before spreading to the southern regions over the weekend.

The public is advised to take precautions against prolonged exposure to high temperatures, which can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

People are urged to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activities and avoid strenuous exercise between noon and 15:00. They should also seek shade or remain in well-ventilated areas.

Extra care should be taken to protect vulnerable people, particularly older people and babies.

The meteorological service said it would continue monitoring the weather system and issue updates as the situation develops.
