Weather incidents and flood safety advisory
The City of Windhoek has issued an update on weather-related incidents following a strong storm that struck the capital on the evening of Saturday, 31 January 2026, between 21:00 and 22:00. The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) recorded several incidents, prompting immediate assessments and interventions to safeguard residents and property. On Sunday morning, 1 February, an uprooted tree was reported in a residential property on Edsel Street, Khomasdal. The City’s response team assessed the site and confirmed no structural damage to the property, although tree roots caused minor damage to an underground water pipe. The property owner had already undertaken repairs to mitigate further risk. Later the same morning, a three-bedroom house on Magpie Street, Khomasdal, suffered roof and ceiling damage. A standby Disaster Risk Management officer provided on-site assessment and temporary shelter via a tent. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and household contents sustained minimal water damage.
In response to the ongoing rainy season, the City urges residents to take proactive measures to reduce flood risks. Key recommendations include clearing stormwater drains and natural water channels, securing important documents in waterproof containers, preparing emergency kits with food, water and first-aid supplies, and understanding how to safely switch off electricity and gas in case of evacuation. Homeowners are also advised to maintain roofs by inspecting tiles, gutters, and flashings, trimming overhanging branches, and repairing any cracks that could allow water penetration.
During flood events, residents should avoid walking or driving through fast-flowing water, move to higher ground if necessary, and exercise extra caution at night. Vehicles stalled in floodwaters should be abandoned immediately.
For emergencies, residents can contact the Emergency Control Room at 061 211 111, City Police at 061 302 302, or the Roads and Storm Water Division at 061 290 2363.
The City of Windhoek continues to monitor weather conditions closely and calls on residents to remain vigilant, prioritise safety, and cooperate with authorities throughout the rainy season.
