The National Theatre of Namibia buzzed with excitement last Saturday as the 2023 Standard Bank Waka Kids Choice Awards took place.
This anticipated event, in partnership with children’s programme Waka Waka Moo, served as recognition for the efforts and contributions of learners, teachers and corporates in both the educational and creative spheres.
The event marked the second edition of the awards after a two-year hiatus.
Waka Waka Moo, founded in Namibia under the guidance of Luis Munana, has provided a platform for the country's youngsters to shine. Beyond entertainment, it champions educational storytelling, touching on vital topics such as health, safety and financial literacy. Importantly, it does so in local languages, connecting directly with its intended audience - Namibian children.
"We reached our goal and are extremely happy with how everything turned out. We made the impact and caused the conversation we wanted to stir. We are headed in the right direction in terms of giving the youth a voice,” production manager Kalistu Mukoroli said.
Standard Bank Namibia's partnership with Waka Waka Moo underscores their shared belief in the youth's potential.
"Our commitment as a brand believes that this sponsorship will be a significant contribution to an industry with the potential to impact so many young lives and create a sense of purpose among children," the bank’s head of marketing and branding Magreth Mengo added.
The 2023 edition of the awards provided a stage to honour those who stood out such as Fatima van Wyk from Delta Secondary School, who received the kids' choice award for overall exceptional teacher.
Delta Secondary School was also recognised as an exceptional school for social change.
Junior Kapofi from Namibia Media Holdings’ My Zone expressed appreciation for his team after winning the best kids' TV show award.
"At My Zone, we have several youth-centric shows that engage various groups of young people, and we find great joy and gratitude in the fact that you guys voted for us,” he added.
