City warns against illegal water connections
The City of Windhoek has issued a public notice warning residents and businesses against illegal water connections, saying offenders face immediate disconnection, financial penalties and possible legal action.
The municipality reminded the public that unauthorised water connections are unlawful and strictly prohibited, urging residents to refrain from the practice to avoid severe consequences.
According to the notice, illegal water connections include connecting to the municipal water supply without approval, tampering with or bypassing municipal water meters, reconnecting a water supply after it has been disconnected by the City, and unlawfully supplying water to neighbouring properties.
The City said anyone found in violation of the regulations will be subject to the immediate disconnection of their water supply. Offenders may also be fined up to N$1,000, in addition to back charges based on estimated water consumption in line with Clause 11 of the Water Supply Regulations.
Those responsible may also be required to pay the costs of investigations, repairs and administrative processes resulting from the illegal connection. The municipality further warned that legal action may be instituted under Clause 74 of the Water Supply Regulations. Upon conviction, offenders could face a fine of up to N$2,000, imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months, or both.
The City urged residents to comply with municipal regulations and report any suspected illegal water connections. Members of the public can report suspected illegal water connections or make enquiries by contacting the City of Windhoek Customer Contact Centre on 081 950 3777.
The notice forms part of the municipality's efforts to protect public infrastructure, ensure the fair distribution of water and discourage practices that undermine the integrity of the city's water supply network.
